Avoiding the Cream Puff

Avoiding the Cream Puff

Don’t let the title fool you, this is not a post on dieting or even lenten sacrifice. This is merely a post with a quick update on painting the master bedroom.

In the final year of living at our previous house we purchased a bedding set for the master from Pottery Barn. It was one of those rare times where budget went out the window and we just went with what we liked (more on that here).

One of the problems I came across after getting this new set, as well as new ivory colored curtains, was that the entire room looked very very blah. In fact, I believe I referred to it as a giant cream puff in this post. Well, since we’re reusing that same bed and Pottery Barn bedding set (at least for the time being) I was well aware of what NOT to do when it came to choosing a paint color for our room. No way I was going to make that mistake again! Of course, I could have gone with the safe solution and painted the room the same, shade of soft green that I ended up painting the master in our previous house. (Sherwin Williams’ “Grassland”)

Ahh, just thinking about it and looking through old pictures reminds of how much I loved how that bedroom turned out in the end. Heck, I loved how that house turned out in the end. It truly went from “that construction site of a house” to “that home that will never forget.” We cant wait until this house makes that transformation. We still drive by it and Landon actually recognizes the neighborhood. Every time he reminds us that he liked the house and that he liked his basement train room. Kids are amazing!

Ok, I’m getting off topic, back to the master bedroom of our current house. As I said, I could have selected the same green as before. I mean, we clearly loved it since we used it again in my aunt’s kitchen and a lighter version of it (“Ancient Marble”) in our previous home’s basement as well as in the recent renovation of my parent’s sunroom. Because we had already used it several times I decided to try something a little different, after all I promised myself I’d take more chances with my design choices for this house! In the end I went with Sherwin Williams’ “Evening Shadow.”

So far I’m happy with the color and I’m glad I at least tried something different. I already have a completely different idea for drapes in this room so I can confidently say that (so far) we’re avoiding the cream puff disaster that occurred in the last master. Lesson learned!

Oh, before I run off to take care of the little ones and show them that their mother does actually like to spend time with them more then with the computer, I should mention something about almost all the rooms we’ve painted. As you may have noticed in this picture of our room (look at the wall near the ceiling in the corner) and in all the pictures in the last post (with the exception of Landon’s room) it looks like we didn’t cut in near the ceiling. Generally the rule of thumb for painting is to cut-in first then roll. Well, technically all of these rooms were cut in and we didn’t actually miss spots or get lazy. These areas are where additional trim is going so once that’s installed we’ll caulk, cut-in again and roll again. Basically, we’re holding off the second coat in these rooms until the trim is up.

Alright, I’m off!
