Movin’ On!
I’ve come close to recovering from our crazy moving weekend so I’m back to post about it. I tried to start the whole packing and moving process as soon as we had the final contract negotiated and the house appraised. I figured this way it would be a less chaotic experience in addition to being more organized. Yeah, not so much! Let me just say that you have absolutely no idea how much stuff you own until you have to move every last bit of it!
To make the move a little bit easier we chose to go with a POD style storage system rather than a standard storage unit. We didn’t actually use the company “PODS” but instead were told by our realtor that Remax (the company we listed the house with) had a contract with Zippy’s Shell Storage and their units were a much better price for us as Remax clients. At any rate we went this way so that once we had another house we would haven’t to reload our belongings and instead they would just be delivered to the new house. Basically we would only have to load and unload once which is great!
Two very full units later we were done packing away all of our “unnecessary” belongings. Things we knew we wouldn’t need while searching for a new house/project.
Then came the really challenging part, the last little miscellaneous items and the thorough cleaning. Since the buyer’s final walk through was on a Sunday, Pavlo and I figured we could go over early the day before and spend a few hours doing that final clean. Yeeeeah that didn’t go as planned. Let’s just say we got back to our house at about 9 am and a whole 12 hours later we were leaving! Yes, it was during that time that we realized the final day of moving was the WORST! Nothing stays organized and you leave with boxes full of random things…which I hate by the way. I felt that despite packing (albeit slowly) for a month straight, every time either Pavlo or myself turned around we found more junk in a drawer, cabinet or closet. I swear these things were falling out of thin air!! The only thing I can say is that because of my somewhat organized packing we left with FAR fewer miscellaneous boxes then when Pavlo “helped” me pack up our tiny one bedroom apartment 3 years ago. I know that doesn’t say much considering Pavlo labeled half of our boxes “miscellaneous” during that move, but I’m going to look at it from a “glass half-full” perspective and think of it as a moving victory.
In the end we made it out just in time because a massive rain storm hit minutes after we pulled out of the driveway with our last carload of belongings.
We did go back one last time with the kids to give a final goodbye to the house we made our first home.
Ok, so it wasn’t actually the final goodbye. I may or may not have driven by a few times since closing just to look at it and reminisce! What?! Don’t judge, I can’t help myself and you know you would too!
