Kitchen Trim
Two weeks ago I promised a post on the kitchen trim, yes TWO WHOLE WEEKS AGO! I’m going to go with the “better late than never” mentality and just move on hoping to never have such a delay again! Eh, who am I kidding, I’m bound to be delayed with two kids and a house under renovation!
Now, back to the trim I promised. We’ve added a cove, crown moulding to the cabinets. First, here are some pictures before the moulding.

We also added some extra moulding, called a light rail, to the base of the upper cabinets. You don’t see this very often and when we were ordering cabinets, and given this option, I thought it was unique so I went for it. I must have been having an “I don’t care too much about the budget” kind of day because the light rail is definitely not a necessity…but it looks so pretty! 🙂
Finally, all of the windows and doors in the kitchen and mudroom were trimmed out using the house’s original trim. We took it off and saved it during the kitchen and mudroom renovations specifically so that the whole house would match.
This picture is the newly trimmed-out mudroom window and if you look really closely you even get a sneak peak of the paneling we’ve started in there too.

You may have noticed that the kitchen windows also have new plantation shutters on them. It was something I really hoped we could get for those windows but plantation shutters tend to be a bit pricey. And yes, I realized that had I not splurged on the light rail trim I wouldn’t be worried about the cost of the shutters. Once again, though, look how pretty the light rail is!
Besides, it doesn’t matter now because one splendid day I happen to come across a listing on Craigslist for 2 plantation shutters for just $25 each! Even better, the seller lived two streets away from us! It was meant to be! The only “problem” was that they were an inch too short both in height and width. Funny how this “problem” actually turned out to be perfect because by adding a frame to plantation shutters it gives them a more custom look AND made them fit! I’m hoping to post about building a frame and making the shutters work for us a little later, for now I’m going to publish this and move right onto writing a post on all the progress we’ve made in the mudroom that I dreamed up here.
