Facelift for Dad’s Childhood Dresser!

Facelift for Dad’s Childhood Dresser!

I’ve actually grown up with this dresser being somewhere in the house given that my dad has owned it since he was a mere 13 year old boy. If you know my dad, and do the math, that makes this dresser pretty much an antique (kidding, I love you dad!)

Here is a picture of the dresser that we inherited the day it arrived in our driveway (yes, there is another door to it):

Since our master bedroom had just gotten a new color scheme based around the new bedding set, we decided that the green armoire previously in our room was no longer appropriate.

Not the best picture of it but hopefully you can see what I mean by it not matching the new color scheme!

This piece of furniture was moved out while I brainstormed ideas for refinishing this “new” dresser. I quickly ruled out refinishing it to match the bed and night tables, mostly because my personal taste is to NOT have every single piece of furniture match but instead coordinate. It’s actually a really good thing I chose to do something different with this piece considering the cream colored mess that occurred after adding new drapes to the room! This left me deciding between the soft green found in the new quilt or the greyish blue of the lamps (which was also pulled from the new bedding set.) In the end I wanted even more of the greyish blue somewhere in the room so we went that route.

Just in case you’ve forgotten, here’s a quick reminder as to what the lamps look like:

To tackle this refinishing job we needed: a stain in our chosen color, a whitewash glaze, shellac and some sandpaper. The refinishing process itself consisted of a light sanding, a coat of the stain followed by a light coat of the whitewash glaze then topped off with shellac to slightly blend together the stain and glaze as well as to protect the wood. After it dried new pulls were added to both the doors and drawers leaving us with a “new” dresser for our room!

Here’s a quick reminder shot of this dresser before:

And after the facelift we were left with this:

I think it looks pretty amazing next to our new bedding set:

Stay tuned for final pictures of the master bedroom/suite!

Also, just in case you were curious, much like with mixing paints, certain stores are able to tint stains to colors outside of the usual brown family, we got our greyish blue stain at Lowes.
