Out With the Old, In With the New

Out With the Old, In With the New

By the time demolition was finished we had one incredibly full dumpster sitting on the driveway. Yup, it was pretty much the neighborhood eyesore and I’m sure it was a happy day for all the neighbors when it got picked up. It was also a happy day for us because within about a half an hour of the dumpster getting picked up, the new cabinets arrived! So exciting!

Dumpster getting picked up. Yes, I took the picture through the window (which had a screen on it) because it was a really ugly day and I was extremely pregnant and therefore tired!

The cabinets we selected are all solid wood maple cabinets with dovetail joints and soft close drawers and doors. They are all the same style door (which the company calls the “Madison” door) but we chose to have the island stained a different color from the perimeter cabinets. The cabinets ordered for the perimeter of the room were given a natural wood finish with a mocha glaze while the island cabinets were stained darker in a color called “Bison.”

The cabinet delivery had so many boxes (which is good because that means a whole lot of cabinet space) that the garage barely had enough room left for the appliances…which, by the way, came in 24 hours later!

The new appliances selected are all stainless steel Frigidaire appliances. Sticking with a single manufacturer ensures a consistent look in the kitchen which appeals to buyers and therefore slightly increases the home’s resale value. There are exceptions to this “rule” (for example, a gourmet chef is going to select a top of the line make and model range but may not care quite as much about his microwave) but none of them applied to this kitchen so for aesthetic purposes we stuck with one manufacturer.

The dual-fuel range with a gas stove and an electric oven. This is an example of how you really can have the best of both worlds. Most people would agree they prefer to cook on a gas stove, however, electric ovens are actually preferred by many because they bake more evenly. It used to be that you had to sacrifice one for the other, not any more!

With the cabinets and appliances delivered we were officially ready to begin cabinet installation. Well, we were ready for installation but the floors were going to hold us up a bit. At the time they were in the final stages of being patched and refinished and they now look amazing! Check back soon for pictures on how those beauties turned out. Yup, that’s right, I’m going to have to leave you hanging again.
