Should We Stay or Should We Go?
Last spring Pavlo and I were sitting out on our deck admiring this (which, btw, is the current view of our backyard. So beautiful!)
and discussing what a great home this house had become. As we were talking the conversation gradually changed from, “what a great house” to, “now that it’s almost done, what’s next?” Now, I’d be lying if I said that this completely caught me off guard. When we were house hunting all of the homes we considered were fixer-uppers that we would be happy to make a long term home or be able to renovate and sell for a profit or. Basically, we didn’t look for our ultimate dream home but we also didn’t look for a house that we would be miserable in but would give us a nice profit.
At the time of this conversation we had lived in the house for 2 years and only had the carport and laundry room left to complete. Unfortunately I looked a little something like this
so we would have been insane to add selling, and possibly moving, to our already rather full plate.
Last summer, when our baby girl was just a couple months old, we revisited the topic of staying in the house longer or selling come springtime. I didn’t want to have to redecorate the upstairs guest room as a nursery only to put the house on the market a few months later. I felt like it would have been a giant waste of time, energy and money.
Fast forward 8 months to March 1st of this year and this is what our house looked like
Notice something different? Like a “For Sale” sign? Yup, the number that we were given as a suggested listing price exceeded our expectations and was simply too good to turn down. We decided to list our house and see if we got any bites. Given the current economy we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. We were prepared to have the house sit on the market for a few months before pulling it off and calling it our home for a little longer. Like I said at the start of this post, we really love how this house has turned out, it’s truly become a home so we were perfectly fine with staying here longer.
On the flip side we were also prepared to say goodbye to what has been a wonderful home. Landon was only 3 weeks old when we purchased the house. He learned to walk, talk (and now talk back!), ride a bike, throw a ball and so much more, in this house. Colette was obviously brought home here and the majority of our memorable moments with her have occurred in this house. Although it would be bitter sweet to part with this home, should it go that direction we were ok with that too. All in all, we had mentally prepared ourselves for anything…or so we thought!
