A Dent in the Plans

A Dent in the Plans

I mentioned at the end of the last post how we could really use fewer surprises when it comes to this kitchen. Just like with any renovation, we’ve definitely had our fair share of hiccups and most have been resolved so easily that they really weren’t worth blogging about. I probably should share all the mishaps just so you realize that not everything is rainbows and butterflies when it comes to our projects, and I will definitely try to blog on them more from here on out. At any rate, this past week delivered two issues that just can’t go without mentioning, so here we go!

Remember our spectacular stove I wrote about in this post? Here’s a picture just to reinforce how amazing it is:

Weeeelllll, despite giving it a quick once over to check for damages, we purposely left it tightly wrapped up (along with all the other appliances) to protect it until we needed it for install. On Friday we were ready to install it so we eagerly ripped off all the cardboard, styrofoam & bubble wrap only to discover they had sent us the wrong model! I know, shame on us for not thoroughly checking that itty bitty detail! To be fair, the only difference is in the bottom of the ranges. We ordered the one with feet on the bottom (seen above) but they sent us the one with a warming drawer underneath:

Range with warming drawer

Ugh, so frustrating! We must have gotten so excited when it was delivered that, since at first glance it looks just like the one we thought we had ordered AND we didn’t want to remove all the packaging, we thought nothing of it. Unfortunately this means a great deal of time will be spent on the phone with customer service to try and correct this error!

Okay, I was raised to always try and find the positive in a situation, you know, to try and look at it from a glass half full perspective? So I’ll do that here too. Here it is, the silver lining in this range debacle. At least the range didn’t come in damaged…like the hood did! Yes, somewhere in the packaging and delivery process the hood must have been dropped because there is this huge dent in the side:

Dent in the new hood!

I know, you’re probably thinking that we really have to check our items when they’re delivered. We actually do, and much like with the range, the hood was covered in a lot of protection so we removed as much as possible to take a good look at it without leaving it exposed and at risk to damage (ironic, huh?) Little did we know that the layers of protection were hiding the giant dent. Actually, it wasn’t until Pavlo got the hood installed and THEN removed the rest of the protection, that the dent was revealed. Yes, it was that well protected…and hidden!

Oh, and did I mention the this hood is discontinued? Yes, we actually had to order it twice because the first company called saying they no longer carried it and since a 30″ wide by 18″ high hood by Eurochef was no longer being produced (we have no idea why since they make 30″ ranges), they didn’t have any that they could replace it with.

Okay, deep breath! Once again there is a bright side to this situation. That bright side is that the hood does look really pretty:

Gorgeous, but unfortunately dented, range.

We’re really hoping to have both of these situations resolved by the end of the week and I’ll be sure to keep you posted. In the meantime we have unbelievable weather so we’re making some progress on the exterior of the new mudroom addition.

  • You might like having the warming drawer. You can let bread rise in it and use it for storage when it’s not in use as a warmer. Also, you’ll be spending lots of time dusting under the stove with legs. I vote for keeping stove you have.

Can Pavlo tap out the dent?

    • Yup, we’ve definitely discussed the fact that we may just have to keep the range we received, and we’re fine with that. We had just gotten our hearts set on the stand alone/industrial look of the other one! Not to mention the fact that the one we thought we had ordered is actually more expensive then the one we got, so that would have been a waste of some reno money that could have easily gone to other parts of the kitchen or house! And you’re absolutely right about the dusting, I had actually mentioned that to Pavlo before we ordered the stove and he agreed to cleaning under it on a regular basis! I was hoping that meant he was in charge of regularly cleaning the WHOLE kitchen floor! 🙂

As for the hood, we actually have our HVAC installer coming out to the house today to run over a few aspects of our new system. Since he is constantly working with sheet metal, we’re hoping he can give us the best technique for banging out the dent.
